To promote RE in the State of Karnataka, Department of Energy, Government of Karnataka has issued the Karnataka Renewable Energy Policy 2009-14. The objective of this policy is to harness green and clean renewable energy sources in the state for environment benefits and energy security. The policy has a goal of commissioning 4200 MW additional capacity with accumulative Renewable Energy capacity addition of 6600MW by 2014. In order to facilitate Renewable Energy project financing and Energy Conservation and Efficiency measures Green Energy Fund Akshaya Shakthi Nidhi will be established. Green Energy Cess of Rs 0.05 (five paise) per unit would be levied on the electricity supplied to commercial and industrial consumers. It is estimated to generate about Rs 55 crores annually. Out of which Rs 50 Crores will be set apart for Renewable Energy project financing. The policy gives clarity about various statutory clearances, land usage and requirement, evacuation arrangement, banking charges, wheeling charges, Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), Government incentives and various regulatory issues for the renewable energy. This policy also gives about the year wise target for the various types of renewable energy sources.
